Our 103Km Ultra Marathon Story by Dustin

We could say that this is our one of the best runs as a couple for 2014. Not because of the distance but the story behind every kilometer. We're "mentally" prepared (because we only did a 5Km run training on weekdays and long runs not more than 21Km on weekends).

We had our PR at 50km (8hrs++), then Belle first PR and my new PR for 75Km (16hrs++). We also reached our goal to run 50miler/80Km.

Starting 0Km (Dumaguete City) up to 32Km (Zamboanguita) was running flat road, and at 25Km Buffet Dinner was serve (sinugba na isda). At 32Km to 38Km (Siaton) was uphill and 38Km to 45Km downhill. We walked the whole 6Km Uphill and ran 12Km until 50Km. We passed by 10++ runners during uphill. We took our 1 hour pitstop at 50Km (Siaton Plaza) for a relaxing cold bath, we changed gear (socks and shirts) and ate (tinola na manok). These all happened at night time. Then hello sunrise at 60Km. Brunch was served at 70Km (tinola na isda). Water stations were never a problem for this ultra marathon event: every 2Km - cold ice water station, every 5Km - cold Gatorade and Coke, and every 10Km - with snacks (banana, chocolate, chips, etc.)

Small rain pours at 80Km which gave me a blisters on my right forefoot sole. But I still managed to ran until 94Km using my heel, and then another blister on my heel appears.

The reason for these blisters was wrong choice of shoes for this ultrarunning. I just wanted to wear same shoes with my partner (my Belle) hehehe…

But I am thankful and so lucky to have my Belle on my side. She managed to support me the rest 9Km with my injured right sole (and painful blisters) and brought me to the finishline smiling.

And I am Proud of my Belle that she finished our 103Km Ultra Marathon injured free. Bilib! :) 

We Finished 103Km at 26hr29min33sec.

Despite the cut off time of 24 hours, the organizer and staff never left us alone on the road. They have their motor marshall and rescue truck supporting us for the last 10Km. They gave us cold water, they gave us medical spray to overcome pain and discomforts and most especially encouraged us to finish our race.

All in all, this 103Km Negros Oriental Ultra Marathon was a successful event and I am proud to recommend this ultra event to those who are interested running Ultra Marathons in Negros Island.

Not our first ultramarathon (already did 50K and 75K) but our very first 100-kilometer (103 to be exact) Ultramarathon and we FINISHED!

We’re very impressed how the event was organized. LGUs have visible support by setting up stations with water and some even cold, with Gatorade and even softdrinks, some also has biscuits, chocolates and bananas. Visible motor-marshalls who guides especially solo female runners on dark roads.

Food (warm soup and rice) at 28K (?), 50K and 69K marks.

You’ll also find an ice bath station at the 50K mark where you can deep your legs to temporarily relieve it from swelling and a massage therapist upon your request.

Truly pampered indeed and you can say you really get your “money’s” worth.

We recommend this event for first timers to run a 100K ultramarathon.
